Metals are the Gulf's flagship non-oil heavy industry. Cheap, reliable energy made the region a natural home for aluminium smelting and steelmaking, and the sector now anchors industrial employment in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. These are among the most demanding automation environments anywhere: continuous, high-energy, high-temperature processes that run without interruption for years.

Emirates Global Aluminium

EGA is the largest industrial company in the UAE outside oil and gas, operating smelters at Jebel Ali and Al Taweelah, an alumina refinery at Al Taweelah, and a bauxite mine in Guinea. Its smelters are among the largest in the world and run continuously, because a potline that freezes is a catastrophic loss.

Smelter automation is a specialised discipline. Pot control systems manage alumina feed rate, anode beam positioning, bath chemistry, and cell voltage for hundreds of individual reduction cells, adjusting continuously to keep each cell in a narrow thermal and chemical band. Rectifier and busbar systems handle enormous DC currents. Anode baking furnaces, casthouse furnaces, and ingot and billet casting lines each have their own control packages. EGA has also developed its own reduction cell technology and licensed it internationally, which is unusual for a Gulf industrial company and speaks to the depth of process engineering on site.

Around the core process sit material handling systems, alumina conveying, pot tending machines, fume treatment plants, and extensive drive estates. ABB and Siemens platforms are both heavily represented, and engineers here spend as much time on drives, instrumentation, and DCS as on classic PLC work.

Emirates Steel Arkan

Emirates Steel Arkan operates the UAE's integrated steel complex at Mussafah in Abu Dhabi, using the direct reduced iron and electric arc furnace route, followed by continuous casting and rolling into rebar, wire rod, and heavy sections. The DRI plants, EAFs, ladle furnaces, and rolling mills each carry substantial automation content.

Steel automation is layered. Level 1 handles direct equipment control: furnace electrode regulation, oxygen and carbon injection, caster mould level control, and mill stand hydraulic gap control. Level 2 handles process models and setpoint optimisation, including rolling pass schedules and thermal models. Level 3 links to production planning and MES. Engineers who understand how these layers interact are the ones who become genuinely valuable in metals.

The company has also moved on carbon capture at Mussafah, and the wider push towards lower-carbon steel adds instrumentation and control work around emissions measurement, energy metering, and process efficiency.

Ducab and Downstream Metals

Ducab manufactures power, building, and specialised cables from sites in Jebel Ali and Mussafah, and produces copper and aluminium rod through its metals business. Cable manufacturing is a precision continuous process: rod breakdown, drawing, stranding, extrusion, curing, and testing all rely on coordinated motion control, tension control, and line speed synchronisation. Small deviations produce scrap on expensive material, which makes the automation directly commercially significant.

The wider Gulf downstream metals sector includes Aluminium Bahrain (Alba), one of the world's largest single-site smelters, and Ma'aden in Saudi Arabia across aluminium, phosphate, and gold. Extrusion plants, rolling mills, and fabrication facilities across the free zones add a long tail of smaller automation employers.

Key Technologies in Metals Automation

Metals manufacturing employs the full spectrum of automation technologies:

  • Large drive systems: Medium-voltage and low-voltage variable speed drives, DC rectifiers, and coordinated drive control across mill stands and conveyors
  • Robotics: Robots perform tapping, sampling, ladle handling, marking, and stacking in hot and hazardous zones
  • Vision and measurement: Thermal imaging, laser gauges, and surface inspection systems verify dimensions and quality inline
  • Process models: Level 2 systems computing setpoints for furnaces, casters, and rolling schedules
  • Safety systems: Safety controllers protecting workers around molten metal, cranes, and high-energy equipment, designed to IEC 61508 and IEC 62061 principles

Career Opportunities

Metals offers excellent career opportunities for automation engineers, and unusually good technical depth. Roles range from maintenance technicians and drive specialists to controls engineers, Level 2 process automation engineers, and automation managers. Large plants run structured shift maintenance teams with genuine progression, and several operate their own technical training centres.

Indicative monthly ranges from public job-market data put technicians at roughly AED 5,000 to 10,000, mid-level controls engineers at around AED 12,000 to 20,000, and senior and lead automation engineers at roughly AED 22,000 to 38,000. Shift allowances and site-based benefits are common. Plants operate continuously, so shift patterns and callout obligations are part of the job.

What Comes Next

Decarbonisation is the defining pressure on Gulf metals. Solar-powered aluminium, carbon capture at steelworks, scrap-based recycling capacity, and hydrogen-based reduction pilots all change the process, and every change in the process is work for control engineers. Alongside that, plants are pushing hard on predictive maintenance for critical rotating equipment and on Level 2 model improvements, because a fraction of a percent of yield in a smelter or mill is a large number. Engineers who develop expertise in drives, process models, and industrial data will be highly sought after in this sector.
