The UAE now operates the Arab world's first commercial nuclear power plant. The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi runs four APR-1400 pressurised water reactors, with all four units having entered commercial operation. Barakah supplies a large share of Abu Dhabi's electricity and is central to the UAE's clean energy and Net Zero 2050 plans. Building and operating it created an entirely new engineering discipline in the country, and the automation content is substantial.

The Programme and the Organisations

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) owns the programme. Nawah Energy Company, a joint venture between ENEC and the Korea Electric Power Corporation, operates and maintains the plant and holds the operating licences. The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) is the independent regulator, and the UAE programme has been closely engaged with the International Atomic Energy Agency throughout.

Unlike most nuclear nations, the UAE started with no existing nuclear workforce. The programme therefore built training, licensing, and operational competence from a standing start, including reactor operator licensing and a large national development pipeline. That history matters to anyone considering the sector here, because the emphasis on structured qualification is unusually strong.

Instrumentation and Control at a Nuclear Plant

Nuclear instrumentation and control is the most safety-critical automation work in any industry. Systems are separated by safety classification, and the architecture reflects that separation rigorously.

  • Reactor protection systems: Highly redundant, diverse, safety-classified systems that trip the reactor on defined conditions. These are designed and qualified to nuclear-specific standards well beyond ordinary industrial practice.
  • Engineered safety features actuation: Systems that automatically start safety equipment such as emergency core cooling.
  • Plant control systems: Distributed control of the reactor coolant system, feedwater, steam, and balance of plant, closer to conventional power plant DCS work but with far heavier qualification requirements.
  • Turbine and generator control: Conventional secondary-side control on a very large steam turbine island.
  • Radiation monitoring: Area and process radiation monitoring integrated into plant control and alarm systems.
  • Balance of plant and utilities: Cooling water, HVAC, compressed air, fire protection, and electrical distribution, much of it PLC-based.

Standards and Qualification

Nuclear I&C works to its own standards framework, built around IEC 61513 for nuclear I&C systems, IEC 61508 functional safety principles, and IEEE nuclear standards for safety systems and equipment qualification. Environmental and seismic qualification of equipment, software verification and validation to nuclear expectations, and independence and diversity between protection channels all shape the design in ways that industrial engineers find demanding at first.

Cybersecurity is treated as a nuclear safety and security matter rather than an IT concern, with strict separation between safety systems and any network that could be reached externally.

Careers in UAE Nuclear Automation

Barakah and the wider programme employ a substantial technical workforce. Automation-relevant roles include I&C engineer, I&C maintenance technician, control room operator, systems engineer, and specialists in radiation monitoring instrumentation, plant computer systems, and OT cybersecurity. Support contractors and the supply chain add further roles in outage support, calibration, and modification projects.

The sector values reliability, documentation discipline, and procedural rigour above speed. Security screening and formal qualification are part of the process, and licensed roles involve extended training pipelines.

Indicative monthly ranges from public job-market data put I&C technicians in the region at roughly AED 8,000 to 15,000, I&C and systems engineers at around AED 16,000 to 28,000, and senior and licensed roles above that. Site location in Al Dhafra means accommodation, transport, and camp arrangements are typically part of the package.

Skills and Entry Routes

Engineers entering nuclear automation need solid foundations in instrumentation, control system design, and electrical engineering. Valuable additional skills include functional safety (IEC 61508 and IEC 61511), power plant process knowledge, calibration and metrology discipline, and OT cybersecurity awareness.

Many engineers enter from conventional power generation, oil and gas, or water utilities, with their instrumentation and control skills supplemented by nuclear-specific training. The programme has historically invested heavily in developing people internally, and structured training and professional development are a genuine feature of the sector rather than a recruitment slogan.

What Comes Next

Attention is shifting towards long-term operations: outage management, obsolescence of I&C equipment over a multi-decade plant life, digital upgrades to non-safety systems, and continued strengthening of the domestic supply chain. The UAE has also signalled interest in further nuclear capacity and in advanced reactor technologies. For automation engineers, nuclear offers something rare in the Gulf: decades-long career stability on a single, exceptionally well-documented asset.
