Which industrial protocol should you learn first?
Modbus first, because it is simple enough to understand completely and still ubiquitous. Then PROFINET or EtherNet/IP depending on whether your target sites are Siemens or Rockwell. Most Gulf plants run at least two of the three, and gateways between them are a normal part of the job.

Why is Modbus still everywhere if it is so old?
Because it is simple, open and good enough for slow data. A power meter reporting every few seconds does not need deterministic Ethernet. Its weakness is the absence of real diagnostics — when a Modbus link fails you often get silence rather than an explanation, which is exactly what makes it a good teaching protocol.
Can PROFINET and EtherNet/IP share a network?
Physically yes — both run over Ethernet, and mixed plants are common in the Gulf where a Siemens process area feeds a Rockwell packaging line. They do not speak to each other directly, so you need a gateway or a controller that handles both. Knowing this is a frequent interview question.
What order should you learn them in?
- 1. Modbus — registers, function codes, polling. Small enough to fully understand.
- 2. PROFINET or EtherNet/IP — whichever matches your target employers.
- 3. The other one — much faster once you have the first.
- 4. OPC UA — when you move toward IIoT and OT/IT integration.
