What do UAE automation interviews focus on?
Practical fault-finding, not textbook definitions. Interviewers in Gulf industry are usually working engineers who want to know whether you have been in front of a live panel. Expect scenario questions — something has stopped, what do you check — more often than "define a PLC".
The 12 questions
1. Walk me through the PLC scan cycle.
Read inputs, execute logic, write outputs, housekeeping — repeating continuously. Mention scan time and why a long scan matters for fast processes. Testing: do you understand determinism.
2. A conveyor has stopped and there is no alarm. What do you check?
Structure it: power, safety circuit and E-stops, drive fault status, field device state, then logic and HMI. Naming the order matters more than the answer. Testing: methodical diagnosis.
3. Ladder logic or Structured Text — which and why?
Ladder for discrete and maintenance-friendly logic; Structured Text for maths, loops and data handling. The right answer is "depends on who maintains it". Testing: pragmatism.
4. Difference between PLC, DCS and SCADA?
PLC controls at field level; DCS coordinates continuous process control across a plant; SCADA supervises and visualises. See the full comparison.
5. Explain PROFINET vs EtherNet/IP.
Both are industrial Ethernet; PROFINET is Siemens-centric, EtherNet/IP Rockwell-centric. Mention that they can coexist on the same physical network but need gateways to talk. See our protocol comparison.
6. How do you handle an analogue signal that reads noisy?
Check earthing and shielding first, then scaling, then filtering in software. Reaching for a software filter first is the wrong instinct. Testing: do you fix causes or symptoms.
7. What is a VFD and when would you not use one?
Variable speed and soft acceleration; not needed for fixed-speed loads where a soft starter or DOL is cheaper. See motor control compared.
8. How do you back up and version a PLC programme?
Upload from the live controller, store off-machine with a dated version, keep a change log. Many sites do this badly — saying so shows experience.
9. What is SIL, and does it apply to your work?
Safety Integrity Level under IEC 61508/61511, quantifying required risk reduction. Critical for process work in Abu Dhabi and Ruwais.
10. How would you secure a control network?
Segmentation, no direct internet exposure, controlled remote access, patching discipline, IEC 62443 as the framework.
11. Describe a project you delivered.
The most important question. Situation, what you did specifically, what went wrong, what you would change. Vague answers fail here.
12. What would you do differently on that project?
Have a real answer. "Nothing" reads as no reflection.
How should you prepare?
- Have two projects you can describe in detail, including the failures
- Be able to sketch a simple start/stop with seal-in from memory
- Know the difference between what you did and what your team did
